Academic Incentives and Research Organization for Patenting at a Large French University
نویسنده
چکیده
This article provides an empirical study of the determinants of academic patenting. The data concern more than nine hundred scholars at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg. Our main results show that academic incentives and career issues do not stimulate patenting. Research organization plays a major role for patent production. We find positive effects of laboratory size, of interdisciplinary research, and of colleagues ages. These effects differ from the ones that affect publication performance. Lastly, public contractual funding stimulates patenting while recurrent public and contractual private funding are not significant.

Patenting and Licensing of University Research: Promoting Innovation or Undermining Academic Values?
Since the 1980s in the US and the 1990s in Europe, patenting and licensing activities by universities have massively increased. This is strongly encouraged by governments throughout the Western world. Many regard academic patenting as essential to achieve 'knowledge transfer' from academia to industry. This trend has far-reaching consequences for access to the fruits of academic research and so...

In this paper we distinguish between two motivations that academic scientists may adopt when dealing with patenting activities: a proactive one, where scientists are patent enthusiastic, do believe in the entrepreneurial university and are actively looking for patents. Second, a reactive one, where scientists are more reluctant to patent and, if they however patent, it is only because they are ...

The contribution of academia to US patents has become increasingly global. Following a pause, with a relatively flat rate, from 1998 to 2008, the long-term trend of university patenting rising as a share of all patenting has resumed, driven by the internationalization of academic entrepreneurship and the persistence of US university technology transfer. We disaggregate this recent growth in uni...

The debate on the entrepreneurial university has raised questions about what motivates academics to engage with industry. Our results suggest that most academics engage with industry to further their research rather than to commercialize their knowledge. Ho...
